50th Anniversary of Oktoberfest
The Amana Jaycees got together in 1965 and decided that the Amana Colonies should celebrate their German heritage with an Oktoberfest. It was small celebration with the local high school band providing the music, the Amana Meat Shop providing the brats, and some of the local talent providing a touch of Germany. Held in the parking lot of the old Amana Clubhouse it was small by today’s standards and mostly attended by locals and a few visitors that stumbled upon it.
That was 50 years ago and the Amana Colonies’ Oktoberfest has grown into a 3 day event that welcomes thousands people annually with numerous bands, plenty of Amana food and beer, and a feel of Bavaria right here in the middle of Iowa.
Oktoberfest has seen many changes over the years including the addition of a parade, a ceremonial First Keg Tapping, and an Eisenmann (Ironman) Competition. True to the original beginnings 50 years ago the fun and feeling of hospitality you’ll find in the Amana Colonies remains the same.
Join us October 2-4, 2015 for Iowa’s original Oktoberfest in the Amana Colonies, a place like no other.
