You won’t find any mall stores in the Amana Colonies. It’s just not that kind of place. What you will find are small shops of all types that are owned by the Amana Society (the original settlers of the community) or mom and pop entrepreneurs that have a special focus. Many of the shops will carry some locally made products along with interesting things from far off places. If you are interested in locally made items make sure to ask the shop keeper to point them out.
If you have planned the entire day you can easily stroll the streets and pop in and out of shops but if you are on a tighter time frame grab an Amana Visitors Guide and map and plan your strategy to maximize your time.
The food shops will generally be sampling something so you’ll get to nibble a little bit. You’ll find a variety of tasty items made right here in the Colonies and some unique items imported. You might have guessed that German specialties are the favorite.

Established back in communal days in 1857, the store’s exterior and interior have remained virtually unchanged all these years. The original tin ceiling, wooden floor, and glass-topped display cases still remain. Throughout the store are charming reminders of the good old days, of a simpler time, of the past preserved. Ackerman Winery is proud to have the distinct honor of being the oldest operating winery in the state of Iowa. The Winery started in 1956 by Harry and Louisa Ackerman. In 1974, their son Les Ackerman along with his wife Linda took over operations and carried on the family wine-making tradition for over 40 years. The Amana Heritage Society maintains a group of arts-and-culture museums that display and interpret artifacts and photos of the history of the Amana Colonies. The Amana Heritage Museum is comprised of three 19th Century buildings, set in spacious grounds. The Noé House, built in 1864, was originally a communal kitchen and later a doctor’s residence.
