We Know Good Food

Creating and serving good food has been an Amana Colonies tradition for so long it's become a way of life here. From the days when each village had its own bakery and smokehouse and its own neighborhood kitchen houses where time-tested recipes were passed down to the present, the Amana Colonies have earned a well-deserved reputation for creating good food from scratch.

Child

Bread dough rising in the trough, ready to be cut and shaped by hand, coffee cake and Streusel out of the oven, too hot to slice, neighbors arriving early in the morning, coffee cups in hand, for their loaf of fresh bread - the routine at the Hahn Bakery in Middle Amana hasn't changed in 140 years and neither have the recipes. Doris Hahn, who owns the bakery and does the baking herself, wouldn't have it any other way. It's hard work, but this is how it's done at the Hahn Bakery.

The Amana Stone Hearth Bakery in the village of Amana specializes in its own delicious breads, pastries and cookies all baked on-site by folks who make it their business to do the job well. The Stone Hearth staff regularly stands watch over the stove making their own Stone Hearth jams and jellies.

Meat Shop

Just down the street and around the corner is the Amana Meat Shop and Smokehouse continuously operated since 1855. Using recipes they know by heart, the butchers make sausage the Amana way. Once you try Amana Bockwurst, Bratwurst, Knockwurst, cheddar Bratwurst, Pfefferwurst, Thuringer, country maple sausage or their smoked summer sausage you won't accept another brand. Cured hams and bacon, smoked Amana pork chops, tenderloins, specialty meats and cheese, plus German specialty foods, gift boxes and variety packs are available at the shop or on-line at www.amanameatshop.com.

Henry's Village Market, in the old Homestead butcher shop, offers Iowa-grown and produced meat, goat cheese, seasonal fruits and vegetables, plus imported German and European foods, gourmet and organic foods, specialty beers and more. Forget the chain stores and supermarkets, Henry's Village Market makes shopping for dinner fun.

We dare you to stand in the Chocolate Haus in the village of Amana and not crave their decadently delicious truffles, caramel pecan turtles or mouth-watering fudge. Or try to resist their hand-dipped chocolates, super rich desserts and made-to-order coffee, brewed rich and hot, just the way you love it. We know you'll give in to temptation.
